I am doing this great Bible study with some ladies here in Colorado. We are reading "No Other Gods" by Kelly Minter and it has been so good.
II Kings 17:33, 41 "They worship the Lord, but they also served their own gods. Even while these people were worshiping the Lord, they were serving their idols." Kelly says, "God and gods: the people were living split lives, worshiping the One, while serving the others."
We get so discontent and disheartened when we allow things in our lives to be gods about God. . .to be (according to Ken Sande) "something other than God that we set our heart on, that motivates us, that masters and rules us, or that we trust, fear, or serve."
Kelly says also, "A professed god is who or what we say our god is; a functional god is who or what actually operates as our god."
Richard Keyes says, "It (an idol) may well come in the form of an overattachment to something that is, in itself, perfectly good."
This study is leading to great time of personal reflection and it is helping me to put my life back into priority. God needs to be the hub of my wheel so that the rest of my life can track along smoothly and in perfect balance. What do I put my energy into?
