Yes, I used all caps in the title. I can't help it. I feel "all caps" when I talk about or think about my weekend on the Nile River. The. Nile. River. As in Moses. I rafted the Nile. I rafted Class V rapids (for those of you who don't know what Class V means. . .it means that people die on Class VI so you have to walk around Class VI. . .I rafted fives). Wow!
The Nile was beautiful! We spent our first night in a backpackers tent camp overlooking the river from a cliff high above. Breathtaking! I'll post more pictures once I get back to the States because internet isn't so great here.
The rafting was exhilarating! I was petrified and excited all at the same time! My mouth was WIDE OPEN in every picture. . .I was so excited! That also meant that when we tipped over (and we did), I swallowed most of the river (and all the snail eggs and parasites that come with ingesting a river in Africa). I wish I could describe the experience more than I am. I am on such a high. I cannot wait to come back with Andy and the kids so that I can share it with them. Wow. I say it again: Wow!
I thought of my grandpa, Pappy, the entire day. He would have be the one who would have most enjoyed the Nile with me and who would have been the proudest of me for rafting it. He was hooked on high-adrenaline kayaking and all day I was thinking about how much he would have absolutely loved being on the Nile and right in the middle of those HUGE rapids!!! I know that he knows, but I wish I could be the one to tell him right now... pulling up an ottoman next to his chair and telling him all about my day on the Nile River with my huge smile!
The time with my two new friends, Lauren and Shelley was perfect, too! I've only known them ten days and I feel like we've been friends for a lifetime. We have a blast together and they don't even care that I'm old enough to be their mom!
So, the Nile was off the 1 to 10 scale. There just isn't a number to sum it up. Great weekend traveling to Jinja via Boda (motorcycle) and Matatu (mini van taxi) and a very overly crowded bus. Great time at the backpackers camp. Amazing time on the Nile itself. What a rush!!!
