So, I have a few things my kids have said recently. Since camp is up and running now and I'm not around much, they are mostly heart-wrenching instead of funny. Oh well. Welcome to my life in the summer!
Gabby was praying (with her babysitter) the other night and apparently, her prayer went something like this:
Dear Jesus, help me see mommy at lunch tomorrow. Amen.
Tiki asked me the other day: Why did you get Gabby before you got me? I knew this question would come someday, but I was not emotionally ready for it. The knife went into my heart and then turned several painful times. It is amazing that he can already put together that he is older but we got Gabby when she was a baby. . .while he was indeed alive and living in the orphanage in Kigali.
Dax told me the other day that I needed to take a day off and spend it with him . . .thankfully that was the day we were headed to Telluride, so it seemed like I really heard him and acted on his wish. One point for mommy.
Hays asked me if I could take him on a date to Farmington (I have to go there every so often in order to go to Sam's and there is a Chili's there that Hays loves). Thankfully, again, I was headed there the next day so I told him that I'd take him tomorrow! He was so excited! Two points for mommy in one summer . . .I have definitely used up my good points already!

(Side note: we have a friend from Kansas City at camp...she probably arrived today...Maggie Simmons! She is good friends with Grant Heinlein and we are so glad she's at camp. Hopefully you'll get to meet her!)

On one hand, my heart broke at the things that hurt your feelings.
But, on the other hand, all I can think of is how amazing you are. The fact you have a child that can even ask why you got Gabby first, when many children are sitting in an orphanage wondering where their Mommy is. Or how it hurts your heart that you are not able to fully devote yourself to them during the summer. Or that you have five children in a time where people think you're crazy for having more than 2.
That is just the short list. Maybe you are falling short in your mind, but I know that is actually not true. Your kids are among the luckiest in the world. And for that you get a zillion mommy points :)
Ok, that got longer than expected. I love reading your stories and very much appreciate the openness with which you share, but I just hope you know that you're awesome!
(Btw, I'm an old kamper from the K-Extreme in Lampe days)
